Potcast 229: Tending the Garden

We’re continuing our Mendo summer farm tour this week. And I’m thrilled to share with you the story of two people who found each other along their paths toward simpler more meaningful lives.

Daniel and Blaire AuClair operate Radicle Herbs and Folk Life Farm, an award-winning small-scale regenerative cannabis and food farm in Covelo, California. Their farm is featured alongside Green Source Gardens and Briceland Forest Farms in a new documentary by La Osa and Biovortex.

Tending the Garden journeys through a year in the life of three family farms cultivating cannabis, food and community in the pursuit of a regenerative future.

I’ve had a sneak peek and it’s a beautiful film. The creators, Claire and Jesse, have been hard at work in the editing room finishing the film and sending it off for the final sound mix. They’re planning more private screenings this summer and fall leading up to the official premiere.

Early supporters will be the first to know when and where you can see it.  Your donations will go towards creating original music, the sound mix, submissions to festivals, marketing and outreach.

Visit tendingthegardenfilm.com to support the film and get the t-shirt.

For you big spenders out there, know that your donation is tax deductible and includes a private farm tour that will blow your mind. Don’t worry, if you’re driving or multi-tasking, I’ll be sure to include in the show notes how you can help support Tending the Garden and its release into the world.

I had the pleasure of walking and talking with both Blair and Daniel in early summer as they tended their garden on a market day. I’ll share videos of that soon on the WeedTube and the Casually Baked YouTube channel. But right now, you’re about to hear my kitchen table convo with Daniel. I just hit record and we started talking. About their homesteading family farm practicing biodynamics. And what led him here. We talk about the importance of growing your own food. Daniel talks chop and drop crops and we get farming tips that even the backyard gardener will appreciate. We take a peek at the business of farming food versus farming cannabis. The importance of community supported agriculture and the drawbacks of a centralized cannabis system and the corporatization of our lives. Like any good kitchen table chat, we talk all over the place. So pull up a chair, and smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. It’s time to get casually baked.

What is Biodynamics?

Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition. Biodynamics is rooted in the work of philosopher and scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner, whose 1924 lectures to farmers opened a new way to integrate scientific understanding with a recognition of spirit in nature. Biodynamics has continued to develop and evolve since the 1920s through the collaboration of many farmers and researchers. Around the world, biodynamics is alive in thousands of thriving gardens, farms, vineyards, ranches, and orchards. The principles and practices of biodynamics can be applied anywhere food is grown, with thoughtful adaptation to scale, landscape, climate, and culture.

The Biodynamic Association of Northern California seeks to inspire social, environmental and spiritual renewal through the cultivation of the art and science of Biodynamic agriculture.
