I had a wonderful weekend catching up with my cannabis community at the Emerald Cup Harvest Ball in Santa Rosa, California. It had been two years since seeing many of my farmer friends and industry colleagues. And of course, we picked up right where we left off discussing ways to collaborate, preserve the heritage of craft cannabis farming, and educate consumers and home gardeners on the ways and importance of regenerative agriculture. I gathered lots of stories that I look forward to sharing with you in the new year and I captured some of the insightful panel discussions I attended which I’ll upload to the Casually Baked YouTube channel over the next couple of weeks. As we’ve discussed on the potcast, it’s a scary time for small farmers - my friend Johnny at Huckleberry Hill Farms was quoted calling it an “extinction event.”
So today I want to spotlight a team of regenerative, craft cannabis farmers focusing on teamwork rather than competition to keep their dreams and farms afloat.
Farm Cut is a group of five small heritage family farms that care about the earth, sustainable practices, and quality cannabis. If you visit a cannabis dispensary you’ll typically see jars upon jars of tiny machine-trimmed nugs that we call “smalls”. You rarely find nice, chunky, lightly trimmed buds. This method of quick machine-trimming used by so many producers degrades the traditional and careful craft of flower preservation. In fact, as soon as cannabis flower is trimmed, it begins to lose its freshness and vitality. So the Farm Cut family of farmers decided to share what’s actually in their personal head stash, full flower cannabis without the trim. With minimally processed flower, you get all of the good stuff which includes the sugar leaves. The sugar leaf is the guardian and protector of the terpenes and cannabinoids inside those nice, frosty kolas.
Farm Cut leaves that protective layer on the flowers throughout the supply chain - so when it reaches us as consumers, the trichomes have remained intact, preserving the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes inside - which translates to the aroma, flavor, and overall experience.
Some people like myself simply smoke those sugar leaves with the flower. They can also be removed right before enjoying a smoke and saved up for making homemade tea, tinctures, oils, and edibles.
When you purchase Farm Cut flower, you are supporting small-scale, diversified farmers who care about the health and wellbeing of the planet. All Farm Cut farmers are Sun & Earth Certified. And their flower is stored in airtight reusable canning jars with a lid made of flax fiber using zero virgin plastic.
If you live in California and want to experience some of the finest whole-plant cannabis produce on the market that’s grown with TLC for the earth, ask your dispensary to carry Farm Cut. Learn more at farmcutcannabis.com.
And when you make such careful considerations on the flower you purchase, it only makes sense to be mindful of what you roll it in. That’s why I choose OCB rolling papers.
All OCB papers are “plant to puff” and made in a facility that’s powered by 100% green energy. OCB offers a full line of papers made with sustainable fibers including Flax, Wood, Organic Hemp, Bamboo, and Virgin wood. All come in a full line of sizes in both booklets and cones.
