Joshua Wurzer is co-founder and president of SC Labs, based in Santa Cruz, California. SC Labs is one of the first analytical laboratories that specializes in testing cannabis and cannabis products. As a chemist, Josh has spent 11 years focusing on the technical side of the industry. His hopes to continue the advancement of best practices and quality control standards in the cannabis industry keeps him busy.

At SC Labs, Josh is primarily responsible for managing regulatory compliance, research and development, and intellectual property. He has a background in analytical and synthetic chemistry and has spent his career in the pharmaceutical and electronic materials industries. Josh has written several cannabis-related patent applications and is a published author. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He serves as a member of the US Pharmocopeia Cannabis Expert Panel. He’s on the AOAC Casp advisory board, and a member of other trade groups focusing on industry and laboratory standards.

The USP Cannabis Expert Panel that Josh is a member of, is working to develop quality and safety standards for the cannabis industry. These guidelines are essential for public health protection and will help facilitate scientific research on cannabis safety and therapeutic potential.

Recently, the USP published the panel’s work on “Cannabis Inflorescence for Medical Purposes: USP Considerations for Quality Attributes.” The paper establishes the need for quality control and public quality standards and begins the conversation on differentiating between cannabis chemotypes.
