Gardening Tips from Briceland Forest Farm

Explore the idea of community over convenience. There’s a whole network of information you won’t find online. Talk to your farmers. Ask them about their farming techniques. And how their season is going. And how they are! They’ll help you choose the best seasonal options. And for you home-growers, local regenerative farmers can share tips for dealing with your seasonal growing issues or pest-related problems in an earth-friendly way.

If you want to be a better gardener, study the soil! And then experiment with what works for you.

These garden companion plants bring out the terpenes in cannabis and flavor in foods: Chamomile and Yarrow

Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till organic gardening method that results in rich, fluffy soil with very little work from the gardener. If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide on no-dig gardening, Happy DIY Home has a great 101 version for beginners.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: You can buy “organic” food that is making the world a worse place. At the same time, you can buy food that isn’t certified organic that’s sustainably grown from a local farmer who can’t afford the certification.

Community + Planet-Loving Cannabis Brands to Know

A 100% Non-Profit Cannabis Brand launched last month in California (May 2019): Buying Brother David’s cannabis is a celebration of small-scale family growers practicing regenerative organic farming, and fighting to end federal prohibition once and for all. Feel good buying and smoking this flower. Ask for Brother David’s flower at your California dispensary.

Sun+Earth Certified: Flower is grown under the sun, in the soil of Mother Earth, without chemicals, by fairly-paid family farmers. The certification standards go above and beyond organic standards by promoting biodiversity and preserving ecosystem health, water conservation, carbon sequestration, growing plants in natural light only, and promoting soil conservation. Learn more about the Sun+Earth flower certification. And then look for the Sun+Earth label when you’re shopping for flower.

If you’re a business owner, consider a CSA integration program for your employees: I encourage you to take a page out of the Flow Kana playbook and support local agriculture by providing CSA boxes to your employees. It’s an amazing work perk to go home with a box full of free veggies grown with love. And you’re supporting the entire community and ecosystem in the process. Learn more about Flow Kana and where to shop their sustainable, sungrown cannabis.
