As cannabis legalization continues, it’s important to understand the potential of medical cannabis. As of July 14, 2023, 22 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized “recreational cannabis” use for adults 21 years and older, while 38 states have legal medical marijuana programs. An additional 10 states permit the use of products containing CBD and small amounts of THC.

Cannabis is one of my favorite medicinal herbs. And it’s so much more than THC and CBD. And whether you call it medical marijuana or recreational marijuana, it has medicinal value that’s optimized when used consciously. I practice a highly responsible wellness lifestyle through mindfulness and microdosing cannabis.

Cannabis as an herbal plant is nuanced. And navigating how to shop for cannabis flower and products can be confusing, even for a veteran pot smoker. My canna curious clients say the dispensary shopping experience was intimidating and choosing the right products and strains was overwhelming before I helped them build their canna confidence!

Outside of the Potcast, I offer engaging experiences to educate and inspire responsible usage of my favorite plant in conjunction with traditional medicinal remedies, personal growth, and relationship building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone overdose on cannabis?

The short answer is no. The fact is that cannabis is one of the safest substances on the planet, which is one of the main reasons it is a viable plant medicine therapy, as opposed to other drugs that cause harmful side effects and can lead to an overdose if too much is used at one time.

However, when a person consumes too much cannabis, there can be repercussions. Using too much cannabis at one time can cause cannabis toxicity. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (aka cannabis hyperemesis syndrome) is a rare and serious side effect of chronic cannabis use characterized by repeated, severe instances of vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain that can last for days. Learn more on Potcast 237 featuring Dr. Codi Peterson.

How do I shop for cannabis?

Regardless if you’re consuming “recreational cannabis” or consuming cannabis as part of a wellness lifestyle, we’re all seeking flower or cannabis-infused products to achieve a desired affect. So the first step in shopping for cannabis is to determine your “why.” Decide the feel you’re seeking and consider the set and setting where you’ll be consuming. Next identify which method(s) of consumption best suit your set/setting and achieves what you’re going for without drawing any unwanted attention - cannabis flower, joint, vape, edible, concentrate, beverage, tincture, oil, suppository, patch, mint, sublingual strips. In cannabis-legal states, you’ve got lots of options. Next, determine the best cannabinoid and terpene combo to suit you. And if you get overwhelmed inside the cannabis dispensary, ask a budtender to help you.

We unpack the cannabis shopping experience on Potcast 204 featuring Andrea Brooks, founder and CEO of Sava, a leading online cannabis marketplace and cannabis delivery service in the Bay Area.

What is a budtender?

A budtender is an employee at a legal cannabis dispensary whose role is to make sure you find the right cannabis flower or products for you. Do not ask your budtender what their favorite cannabis strain (aka Cannabis cultivar) or vape cart is. We are all precious snowflakes with a unique relationship with the cannabis plant. We all metabolize cannabis differently. So instead, tell the budtender what’s ailing you or how you want to feel. Also share your experience level with consuming THC and CBD. The budtender is responsible for pointing you in the right direction, but ultimately the decision is up to you.

I will admit that I can get choice paralysis. So a lot of times I’ll narrow a decision down to two things and then let the budtender, waiter, dressing room attendant, or random stranger - help me make the final decision. But in the end - we gotta own whatever that is.
