Potcast 227: Brewing Craft Beer with Cannabis

It’s been triple digits every day since arriving home to the ranch in Texas.

The dog days of summer are here and it’s easy to toss back light beers like they’re water in this triple digit heat. But instead of reaching for a traditional beer, you can now enjoy the taste of craft brewed beer with all of the benefits and effects of cannabis instead. On today’s potcast, we’re talking to a beer doctor discussing the intersection of cannabis drinkables and the craft beer movement.

Keith Villa, creator of Blue Moon, received his PhD in brewing science from the University of Brussels in Belgium. Keith retired from MillerCoors in January 2018 with 32-years of brewing experience. Keith and his wife Jodi set their sights on creating the finest alcohol-free beers without compromising on taste.

Through Ceria Brewing Company, the couple is reimagining the alcohol-free and cannabis-infused beverage categories. Keith is passionate about creating a delicious, satisfying option for the growing crowd of mindful imbibers who want to feel relaxed and enjoy social situations, but without the negative effects of alcohol.

On this potcast, we compare the effects of beer, alcohol, and cannabis-infused beverages. Keith explains the difference between non-alcoholic and alcohol free. We talk beer terpenes, tasting notes, food pairings and dinner parties. Keith also shares his experience doing business in the alcohol industry and how that compares with his experience now working in cannabis.

If you’re already cali sober, this potcast is definitely for you. It’s also for anyone flirting with the idea of drinking less alcohol without smoking more cannabis. And of course, craft beer lovers, you’ll appreciate hearing Keith’s perspective on the evolution of the beer industry and the rise of craft brewers. You’ll also learn about the beer making process. So smoke ‘em if you got ‘em and belly up to the bar with me. It’s time to get casually baked.

Meet Keith Villa, brewmaster and co-founder of Ceria

Ceria (rhymes with “area”) was founded by legendary brewmaster Keith Villa. When Keith was young, he moved all the way to Belgium to study the art of beer making. After earning a PhD in brewing sciences (which technically makes him a beer doctor), Keith moved back stateside and created Blue Moon.

But that was just the beginning. Keith wanted to apply his craft to something new so he created an entirely new brewing process to produce 0.00% ABV beer with incredible flavor you don’t normally get in a beer without alcohol. Around the same time, he found a passion for creating cannabis-infused drinks and not long after that, Ceria was born.

Keith is also the author of Brewing with Cannabis: Using THC and CBD in Beer. This book is part history, part roadmap with cannabis tincture and beer recipes. Brewing with Cannabis examines the convergence of cannabis and brewing in the modern craft beer movement.
